Racist.. really?
Read this first: 911 caller in Gates case hurt by racist label
Whalen was vilified as a racist on blogs after a police report said she described the possible burglars as “two black males with backpacks.”
Come on. Really? Since when did describing a person by their skin color an act of racism? I know the report is saying she didn’t say that, but let’s assume she did, she would have been labeled a racist. Imagine yourself witnessing (from a distance) a buglary being commited by two dark ass indians or two greeks. How would you describe to the police what they looked like? Your going to describe them as two BLACK guys or two WHITE guys. Should you be considered racist for not saying Asian or European? Or what if you saw Michael Jackson commiting a crime and you told the police the person commiting the crime was African American, so they started searching for a black guy? “Two black males with backpacks” was meant as a quick description of a scene that was being witnessed, nothing else.
Maybe I’m taking this the wrong way. Maybe the whole fuss about this “two black males with backpacks” issue is that the lady was thought to have automatically assumed the burglars were Black without even witnessing the scene herself. Okay, that’s fair. That’s racial profiling. But the report says everything is fine now because:
Tapes of the call released earlier this week revealed that Whalen did not mention race. When pressed by a dispatcher on whether the men were white, black or Hispanic, she said one of them might have been Hispanic.
So she’s not considered a racist anymore because she assumed the burglars were Hispanic and not Black. Hmmm, yes, that makes total sense. I guess racism only applies to Blacks. And shouldn’t the dispatcher also be considered racist for classifying people as “white, BLACK or Hispanic”?
All I gotta say is that you people (oh shit, am I racist now?) at Cambridge need to lossen up and stop being so damn sensitive.
